In 1990 the Administrative Support Division (AS) was formally created by the transfer of several complete units and some individuals from other divisions such as Data Handling Division (DD), Theory Division (TH), Technical Services Division (ST) and General Administration. AS was initially composed of 5 units:

• Scientific Information Group (SI)
• Logisitics Group (LO)
  • Stores
  • Transport and Distribution
• General Services Group (GS)
  • Housing Section
  • Mail Section
  • Welcome Service Section
  • Space Management Section
• Office of the division leader (DI)
  • Translation and Minutes Service
  • Organization and Methods

AS Division was responsible for providing a range of technical, administrative and scientific services to the whole of CERN and to its users.

Groups went to newly created divisions such as Information Technology Division (IT), Supplies, Procurement and Logisitics (SPL) Division, Education and Technology Transfer Division (ETT) while other groups were transferred from Directorate Service Unit to AS Division.
