Administrative history

The NA3 Experiment was set-up on the North Area of the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) by the CERN/Ecole Polytechnique/College de France/Orsay/Saclay Collaboration, to study high transverse momentum leptons and hadrons from hadron collisions.

The NA3 Hadronic production of high pTT leptons and hadrons was approved 12 March 1975 and finished 23 March 1994 with the research programme on SPS (H8 beam). The spokesperson was Aldo Michelini. More information: http://cds.cern.ch/record/5444

Michelini joined CERN in 1960, following a series of experiments with tracking chambers, including some time with Jack Steinberger’s group in Columbia.

At CERN, he first worked on the CERN Wilson chamber.

In 1964 he led a CERN/ETH Zurich/Imperial College London collaboration studying strong interactions using a then novel approach, spark chambers in a large magnet.

In 1969 he led the Omega spectrometer project, a general purpose spectrometer initially equipped with optical spark chambers and downstream Cerenkov counters.

In 1973 Michelini became responsible for a group studying a general purpose spectrometer for the SPS North Area. This led to the NA3 experiment whose valuable measurements included production of (DrellYan) muon pairs and of direct photons.

Following the success of NA3, he became spokesman of the OPAL experiment at the LEP electron—positron collider in 1981.

He retired from CERN in 1995.
