Biographical history
Helmut (Karl) Reich joined the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) Magnet group, as a physicist-engineer in 1955.
In 1964 a major PS upgrade was initiated, and Reich was responsible for studies into the best way to increase the injection energy.
In 1967 the project to construct a fast-cycling 800 MeV four-ring booster (PSB) was submitted to the Scientific Policy Committee (CERN-SPC-249; MSC-Internal Report-67-8) and accepted.
In 1968 Reich was appointed deputy of a new SI (Synchrotron Injector) division. In 1972 the Booster accelerated its first particles to 800 MeV before injection into the PS accelerator.
In 1973, the SI Division was integrated into the MPS Division and became the Booster Group (BR), with Reich as its leader.
In 1983 Reich took early retirement to dedicate himself to research and teaching in psychology at the University of Fribourg.
