Biographical history
Max Ferro-Luzzi studied at the University of Rome, where he joined the nuclear-emulsion group of Edoardo Amaldi and graduated in 1955.
Starting in 1960, he spent three years at the University of California, Berkeley as a National Academy of Sciences fellow in Luis Alvarez’s group.
In 1963 he moved to CERN where he worked in the Track Chambers Division (TC). His most important contribution, using data from bubble chambers, was the discovery and study of baryonic resonances, especially the elucidation of hyperon resonances.
Ferro-Luzzi was among the first to realize the need to move to electronic detectors.From 1970 to 1980 he formed a small group of counter-and bubble chamber physicists (Group K-) who carried out a high-statistics study of low-energy hadron elastic scattering by purely electronic means. Here, he pioneered new techniques in multiwire proportional chambers and ultraviolet Cherenkov light detection.
In 1976 he spent a sabbatical year at Standford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC).
In 1984 Ferro-Luzzi turned to weak interactions and neutrinos with an experiment at CERN PS (PS191), then in 1986 at the AGS (Alternating Gradient Synchrotron) in Brookhaven with experiment E816. He also conducted tests of the first prototype for the ICARUS (Imaging Cosmic And Rare Underground Signals experiment) neutrino detector. In 1989, he became active in the Jetset experiment (PS202) at CERN’s Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR).
In 1995 he joined the DIRAC (Dimension Relativistic Atom Complex) collaboration and led the CERN group that played an important role in setting up and carrying out the experiment (PS212).
He retired from CERN in 1997.
Massimiliano was appointed as
- Chairman of the library committee from 1978 to 1989
- Member of the Proton Synchrotron and Synchrocyclotron Committee (PSCC) from 1980 to 1982.
- Scientific secretary of the Research Board from 1984 to 1997.
